On September 10, 2015 several members of our firm were honoured to attend the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers’ Association’s celebration of Lillian Ruby Clements. She was called to the Alberta Bar 100 years ago and was the first woman lawyer in Alberta.
Guest speakers included the Honourable Madam Justice Joanne Veit, the Honourable Marguerite Trussler, Q.C., and Gail Cohen, Editor in Chief of Canadian Lawyer. The Keynote Speaker was The Honourable Madam Justice Suzanne Cote, the newest member of the Supreme Court of Canada. These women shared their stories of growing up and carving out a path for themselves that not only led to their success but led to them achieving meaning and fulfilment in their lives. Without exception their paths had challenges and obstacles. While the paths were all different – in place, in time, in experiences, their messages were not: stand up for what you believe in; don’t accept what is not right; don’t accept that you “can’t”; understand that change that lasts often comes slowly; work hard; guide others coming behind you and look for guidance from those who came before you. We can all be guided by these words.
