The Provincial government announced they will be increasing bereavement benefits payable to family members upon the compensable death of a loved one. Parents and spouses will be entitled to $82,000 up from $75,000, while children will get $49,000 up from $45,000. These increases have been at least 5 years in the making, and will be considered inadequate to most of the Plaintiffs’ bar. The article rightly suggests that no amount will compensate a family for their loss, however, these amounts remain paltry compared to the reals costs, emotional and other, to the family.
